”Ashita no Joe” reprinted

boxThe legendary Japanese manga‘‘Ashita no Joe’’ (Tomorrow’s Joe), which was a smash hit in the late 1960s and early 1970s, will be reprinted starting next month in a major weekly magazine, the publisher said. Kodansha Ltd will start to reprint most episodes of the comic in its weekly Shukan Gendai from the issue hitting the market March 2 under a project through the year-end.

It is rare in Japan, the home of manga, for a major weekly to reprint a legendary manga . Tomoyuki Inui, editor-in-chief of the weekly, said he hopes the story of a tough boxer, Joe, will help give comfort to salaried workers in Japan who have been down both physically and mentally in the recent economic downturn. The manga featuring more realistic and graphic pictures than other comic books depicts a fictitious boy, Joe Yabuki, who dedicates himself to boxing aiming to turn himself around from delinquency through a number of matches including those with his chief rival named Toru Rikiishi.
